🔀 Text Scrambler

Scramble the middle letters of each word while keeping the first and last letters in place — the famous Cambridge University reading effect. All in your browser, no upload, instant results.

About the Text Scrambler

This text scrambler runs entirely in your browser. It reorders the middle letters of each word while keeping the first and last letters in place — based on the famous "Cambridge University" reading effect, which suggests that the human brain can read words as long as the first and last letters are correct, regardless of the order of the letters in between. Nothing is uploaded — the scrambling happens instantly with JavaScript on your device.

How it works

  • Word splitting — The text is split into words while preserving whitespace and punctuation.
  • Middle scrambling — For each word longer than 3 letters, the middle characters are randomly shuffled. Words of 3 letters or fewer remain unchanged.
  • First and last preserved — The first and last letters of each word always stay in their original position.

How to use the scrambler

  1. Paste or type your text in the input box.
  2. Click Scramble to shuffle the middle letters.
  3. The result appears in the output box.
  4. Click Copy to copy the result, or Clear to start over.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my text? No. All scrambling happens locally in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.

Will the output be the same every time? No. The scrambling is random, so each click produces a different result. Click multiple times to get different variations.

Does it work with numbers and punctuation? Yes. Numbers and punctuation marks are preserved in place. Only alphabetic characters in the middle of words are shuffled.

Why are short words unchanged? Words of 3 letters or fewer have no middle characters to shuffle, so they remain as they are.
